Ten IPOs raised a combined $1.8 billion in August, joined by two direct listings. Activity slowed from July’s pace as the market entered its typical summer slowdown but was slightly above the month’s 10-year historical average (10 IPOs, $1.7B). Six IPOs raised $100 million or more. Bolstered by strong returns from recent biotech listings, drug developers dominated the docket, accounting for four of August’s five largest deals. Cardiovascular-focused Braveheart Bio (BRVE) completed the month’s largest offering, raising $383 million and jumping 66% in its debut. Metabolic disease biotech Vogenx (VOGX) was the standout performer, ending up 161% from offer. Returns were solid overall, with the month’s traditional IPOs averaging a 23% return from offer, primarily driven by positive trading in the aftermarket. The Renaissance IPO Index rose 4% in August, modestly outpacing the S&P 500’s 3% return. New filing activity was more muted than expected, particularly near month end. Just 14 companies submitted initial filings, led by UK-based power equipment provider Aggreko (AGKO), which we estimate could raise $1.5 billion in its offering. The biggest news came from the backlog: AI giant Anthropic is reportedly planning to file publicly after Labor Day, setting up a historic fall for the IPO market. While August filings provide little visibility into upcoming activity, a strong backdrop and a decent pipeline of active issuers on tap should support modest deal flow heading into September. Activity beyond that will depend heavily on a pickup in new filings.
